Slit couplings by Miki Pulley
What is a slit coupling?
A slit coupling, also called a spring bar coupling or sliced coupling, is a shaft coupling which connects two shafts to each other. Our torsional stiff slit couplings are manufactured in one piece and are available in almost all sizes in aluminum, steel, or stainless steel. They can withstand high temperatures and are designed for high torques in addition to transmit power at the correct angle.
How does a slit coupling work?
The ASK spring bar coupling gets its elasticity from its milled slot packs. It is capable of compensating for axial, lateral and parallel misalignments. The unique slot structure was once a revolution in the coupling market and has proven to be a reliable solution in highly resonant or out-of-alignment mounting situations.
The ASK slit coupling can be connected to shafts in a variety of options. Both as a clamping hub with and without a keyway and as a model with a set screw. Removable clamping hubs are also available for easier assembly, as well as a bore to expand shaft.
The fact that the coupling remains torsional stiff is due to the especially developed slit structure of the ASK slit coupling. The slots are arranged in tiers, with each tier having either two or three slots (depending on the diameter of the coupling).
The tiers are rotated 90° in relation to each other for two slots per tier or 120° for three slots. This creates an asymmetrical slot pattern that can perfectly absorb torsional stresses in both directions of rotation. In addition, this slit coupling also enables a damping effect due to the slot packages. The one-piece design enables a high rotational speed.
What are the applications for a slit coupling?
There is a variety of industries and applications for the ASK slit coupling:
• Special machines
• Measuring systems
• Conveyor systems
• Machine tools
• Precision tools
• Medical technology
• Aerospace industry
• Packaging industry
• Textile technology
• Materials handling
• Robotics technology
• Food technology
• Laboratory technology
• Environmental technology
• Semiconductor industry
• Vehicle construction and railroad technology
The ASK slit coupling is particularly suitable for customer-specific applications, as the length, slot geometry as well as the diameter can be adapted to any application condition.
What makes Miki Pulley's slit couplings stand out?
Our ASK spring bar coupling is produced in Germany from high-quality materials. It impresses with its low mass inertia and offers maximum torsional stiffness even during dynamic load changes. The maintenance- and wear-free slit coupling allows highest speeds due to its one-piece, torsionally rigid design.
Special features such as lightweight construction, positional accuracy and various clamping options continue to characterize the ASK and are becoming increasingly important in modern mechanical engineering. Rotary encoders and servo motors can transmit high speeds of up to 11,500 min-1 with torsional rigidity using the ASK slit coupling (balanced up to 40,000 min-1).
From sample production to series production, ASK slit couplings are manufactured by us according to customer requirements.
Who developed the slit coupling?
The first patent application with the slotted spring bar coupling was filed in 1986 by the founder of the subsidiary VMA Verbindungs-, Mess und Antriebstechnik GmbH Dipl.-Ing. Werner Hasenstab. In the following years further, patents followed for e.g. cross slider couplings, clamping sets, torque limiters and safety couplings.
